Wexford Cycling League 2014

Post by johnd »

Derek Webb from Wexford Cycling & SERC asked me to let you all know about the Wexford Cycling League that takes place every summer.
Registration for the league costs €20. Once registered you will received your race numbers to be worn each race. When you return you numbers at the end of the leagues you will get €10 back.
Anyone racing will need to have Cycling Ireland licence http://www.cyclingireland.ie/page/membe ... membership
Licence type required would be either limited competition or full competition

There has been a bit of talk about marshaling for these leagues. Members of Racing 795 will not be required to marshal, so if anyone wants to race, just turn up on the night.
No need to preregister or anything, just bring your bike and your licence.

The first league to start is restricted to novice & A4 category riders. It is hosted by Slaney CC and starts in Enniscorthy on Wednesday 23rd April, it would be ideal for anyone interested in trying out a bit of bike racing.
All other leagues are open to all rider categories.

Below is the full list of events in Wexford this year. A limited competition licence is sufficient for all the league races, but a full competition licence would be required for any of the open races.

Good showing by John tonight.
Involved in a few breaks with Mick Foley but unfortunately none successful this time.

Nice to see jersey there but he could do with some support.
Its like the Tdfrance with the team tatics.

Well done John - I upgraded the CI license yesterday so will give it a go after the adventure race.
Think Jim will give it a lash also.

Great nights racing, really enjoyed it.
Great to have the bit of support from PJ & Mike at the side of the road, and from Mick Foley out on the road.
Figured that I was never going to feature in a sprint finish so decided that i'd go off the front early and often. The novice group started out slow enough so when I rolled over to the front after about 2km I went for it and pulled out a gap to see who would come with me, just as I was about to give up Mick Foley pulls past me giving me a roar of encouragement and off we took along with a third rider (from SERC) and opened up a gap until we were swallowed up again about 5km later at the end of the first lap.
Things were lively enough then for the next 2 laps before it slowed down again on the 4th. I looked around to see a few lads sitting up chatting to each other not bothering to break much of a sweat so I took another few digs off the front to try stay ahead of the chase group. The pace went up and down all over the final 2 laps until we were eventually caught on the final turn with about 600m to go.
I tried to push to the finish but had totally forgotten to mark where exactly the finish line was, and as a result had a disappointing enough final run in, I ended up easing off a couple of times only to realise we weren't finished yet!!
Still though, great to get out for the spin, and very happy to put in a bit of work off the front and not get dropped either.
The novice group averaged 38km/h, and the A4's something like 39.5km/h for the 5 laps.
Will be out again next week hopefully (a mechanical needs fixing first though!!). Not sure yet will I go for Gorey on Tuesday night or spin down to Enniscorthy again for Wednesday. Either way, will likely try my hand at the Frank O'Rourke Open race down in Camross over the May bank holiday weekend.

Great racing John, was great to see someone having a go.

Pity you didn't get a few more to go with you, knew we couldn't stay away (I'm not known for my 35km breakaways unless it off the back) but its part of the fun.

If you decide to break 2km into the Frank O'Rourke It wont be encouragement I''ll be roaring at you :D

Great stuff , The slaney league is a great place to get some racing experience on a nice safe circuit . The Frank O'Rourke is a bit of tougher circuit it's up and down over the whole lap , just make sure you're near the front everytime over the start/finish line because the little hill after that is tough at the speed they go up it . Best of luck .

Well done John and Mick. Sorry I missed this one, the MTB'ers convinced me it wasn't on till next week.

Going to give it a go next week but don't expect me to be leading you out. I'll be hiding at the back somewhere

Is it ok to turn up without a number, I have the CI licence.

Yeah Jim you should be fine, just so long as your type of CI licence insures you on the road (may be off-road specific??)
I turned up, showed them my A4 licence, noted down the licence number on the sign on sheet, paid my fiver, and suffered for the bones of an hour.
No number, only the members of the 5 Wexford cycling clubs were given numbers. R795 are treated as guests and so no number needed apparently.
